Swinburne University of Technology provides a new approach to learning in Australia, delivering and assessing courses on behalf of Swinburne University of Technology. Our interactive learning format, coupled with the flexibility of online study and 7-day support, gives students all the best features of an on-campus degree in a digital environment.
Founded in 1908 as the Eastern Suburbs Technical College in Hawthorn, Melbourne, Swinburne University of Technology originated through the efforts of George Swinburne MLA, backed by Premier Thomas Bent. By 1913, the State Government assumed control, renaming it Swinburne Technical College. It evolved into the Swinburne Institute of Technical And Further Education (TAFE), later shortened to Swinburne Institute of Technology. Responding to advocacy for increased university access in outer eastern Melbourne, Swinburne established the "Eastern Campus" in Mooroolbark in 1990, officially opening in 1992. Attaining university status on July 1, 1992, under the Swinburne University of Technology Act, the university expanded its reach, opening campuses, including Lilydale in 1997 and Sarawak, Malaysia, in 2000. Notably, in 2013, Lilydale campus closed, and in 2014, Prahran campus was sold, marking shifts in response to evolving educational landscapes. In 2015, Swinburne launched its law school in collaboration with the Leo Cussen Centre for Law. The university remains committed to academic excellence and global partnerships.
