  2. Engaging with theoretical and philosophical frameworks that adapt to changing human conditions, including critical posthumanism, sociomaterial theories, and cognitive science, and exploring their implications on both contemporary and historical theatre and performance.
  3. Delving into the breadth of contemporary performance practices, with a focus on 21st-century characteristics and developments, including the integration of innovative technologies, compositional strategies, and cutting-edge work.

Overview

In the Master of Arts in Theatre and Performance (C21 Studies and Perspectives), we embark on a journey to reimagine the realms of theatre and performance in the 21st century. As the world embraces postmodernism, mediatisation, and globalization, our program stands at the forefront of emergent studies and perspectives, weaving connections between contemporary trends and historical legacies.

Through rigorous analysis and critical inquiry, students engage with three principal areas of focus:

  1. Historiography: We challenge conventional narratives and explore diverse perspectives to rewrite the history of performance, drawing from cultures, continents, and epochs to enrich our understanding.
  2. Theoretical and Philosophical Approaches: Guided by emerging frameworks such as critical posthumanism and sociomaterial theories, we dissect the intricacies of human experience and their impact on theatrical expression, both past and present.
  3. Contemporary Performance Practices: With an eye on the future, we investigate the fusion of technology, innovation, and tradition in shaping the landscape of performance art, from avant-garde experiments to mainstream adaptations.

Through a blend of lectures, seminars, workshops, and masterclasses led by international experts, students embark on a transformative learning journey, culminating in a final dissertation that sets the stage for future scholarly pursuits.
