University of Malta
The roots of the University of Malta can be traced back to the establishment of the Collegium Melitense on 12 November 1592, founded through direct papal intervention. Operated by the Jesuits, it was modeled after their other colleges and aimed to educate non-Jesuit students. The Jesuits were authorized to confer degrees in Philosophy and Divinity by papal Bulls dating back to 1561 and 1578, respectively. The curriculum also included subjects like Grammar and the Humanities.The establishment of medical teaching in Malta can be dated to 19 October 1676 when Fra Dr Giuseppe Zammit was appointed as a lecturer in Anatomy and Surgery at the Sacra Infermeria. This marked the inception of medical education in Malta, with Zammit later setting up the first medical library and medicinal herb garden.After the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1768, Grandmaster Pinto seized their property's revenue to fund the establishment of a public university, authorized by a papal Brief in 1769. The University decree was signed on 22 November 1769, with the Collegio Medico established as one of its faculties on 25 May 1771. The initial faculty comprised mainly foreign professors, except for the Medical Faculty, which retained local teachers.The University faced disruptions during the French occupation in 1798 when Napoleon abolished it. However, upon the French departure, it was reinstated by Sir Alexander Ball, with Canon F.X. Caruana appointed as rector in 1800. Subsequent rectors during British rule, such as Fr Gerolomo Inglott, oversaw changes aligning the University with UK universities, including the adoption of the present coat of arms and motto in 1923.After World War II, the University underwent significant developments. The Library and support structures were strengthened, and new facilities were established, including the Evans Laboratories in 1959 and a new Medical School building in 1968. The campus at Msida was inaugurated during this period.Furthermore, the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, along with the Faculty of Education, became part of the University with the incorporation of the former Polytechnic, also known as the Malta College of Arts, Science, and Technology.
