The origins of the present-day University of South Australia (UniSA) can be traced back to significant institutions in South Australia's educational history. The South Australian School of Art, established in 1856, marked the beginning, followed by the formation of the first Teacher Training Colleges in 1876 and the establishment of the School of Mines and Industries in 1889. These institutions were renowned for delivering high-quality education and addressing the needs of the emerging colony of South Australia.Formally established under the University's Act, UniSA's mission, as defined in 1992, is to "preserve, extend and disseminate knowledge through teaching, research, scholarship, and consultancy, and to provide educational programs that will enhance the diverse cultural life of the wider community."The year 1993 saw the creation of the Australian Technology Network (ATN) in collaboration with the Queensland University of Technology, Curtin University of Technology, RMIT University, and the University of Technology, Sydney. In 1994, UniSA established its first two research institutes, the Ian Wark Research Institute and the Institute for Telecommunications Research, followed by the Flexible Learning Centre in 1996, playing a crucial role in advancing strategic directions for teaching and learning improvements.UniSA identified seven Graduate Qualities in 1997, setting a pioneering example, and adopted a Statement of Commitment to Aboriginal Reconciliation. A Statement of Strategic Intent in 1998 defined the University's character and objectives, leading to the replacement of the faculty structure with the current divisional structure.A pivotal milestone in UniSA's modernization was Blueprint 2005, a $140 million project resulting in the closure of the Underdale campus and significant constructions at City West, City East, and Mawson Lakes campuses. In 2008, a new Vision, Mission, and Values statement was released to reflect the University's identity in the 21st century.Horizon 2020, launched in 2010, outlined a 10-year plan for growth and development, with the Crossing The Horizon initiative refining the vision in 2013, guiding detailed actions towards UniSA becoming Australia’s University of Enterprise. In 2018, Enterprise25 was unveiled to further refine the University's strategic direction and establish additional goals for the next seven years.
