Shanghai Ocean University stands as a diverse, applied research institution, jointly founded by the State Oceanic Administration, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government. Notably, in September 2017, it secured a position in China’s prestigious “World First-Class Disciplines Project.” Further, in February 2022, the university earned recognition in the second round of the “Double First-Class” initiative, affirming its status as a world-class institution with first-rate disciplines.
SHANGHAI OCEAN UNIVERSITY was Founded in 1912 as Jiangsu Provincial Fisheries School, Shanghai Ocean University (SHOU) originated from Zhang Jian's vision in 1904, advocating for fisheries rights and the establishment of a fishery school to protect China's sea rights. Despite adversities, with support from figures like Huang Yanpei and Zhang Liu, SHOU officially formed in 1912, evolving into one of China's earliest fishery schools.Through multiple name changes and relocations, including survival through war and the Cultural Revolution, SHOU emerged as the first higher institute of fishery learning in China in 1952. Temporarily relocating during the Cultural Revolution, it returned to Shanghai in 1979, rebranding as Shanghai Ocean University in 2008 to align with marine development goals.Guided by the motto "Diligence, Sincerity, Dedication, and Practicality" since 1914, SHOU has grown into a multidisciplinary university with a time-honored history and strong research capabilities. Boasting over 1000 teaching staff and a significant student body, SHOU has contributed immensely to China's fishery industry.Recognized as the "Cradle for Modern Fishery Education of China," SHOU produced eminent educators and scholars, fostering numerous scientific research achievements at the national and provincial/ministerial level. In 2012, Jiang Zemin's inscription for SHOU's centennial emphasized carrying forward traditions, blazing new trails, and building SHOU into a world-renowned special university. Dedicated to staying current, fostering innovation, and ensuring comprehensive development, SHOU strives to achieve new heights and distinctive advantages in unique disciplines, maintaining an equal emphasis on teaching and scientific research.
