About this Study Course

Imagine a world where the shape of an object defines its function more than the material it’s made from. This is the cutting-edge frontier of Topological Design. The Centre for Doctoral Training in Topological Design at the University of Birmingham is at the forefront of this innovative field, bringing together leading researchers from across Sciences and Engineering. These experts leverage topological principles to make groundbreaking discoveries and design novel materials and devices with exceptional mechanical, optical, electronic, and magnetic properties. As a student in this program, you’ll be part of a dynamic and pioneering community that is shaping the future of technology.

Overview

Topological Design is a revolutionary field that focuses on the functionality of objects and devices based on their shape, rather than the materials they are made from. Rooted in topology—the branch of mathematics that studies properties preserved through continuous deformations like stretching and bending—this discipline is transforming our understanding of various domains, including Condensed Matter, Optics and Photonics, Ultra-cold Atoms, and Material Mechanics.

The Centre for Doctoral Training in Topological Design offers a comprehensive 4-year PhD program that includes an interdisciplinary applied research project. You’ll work with world-leading research supervisors and industry partners, often participating in a 3-month internship. This program not only equips you with advanced technical skills in topology and its applications but also hones your transferable skills, preparing you for a professional research career.

At the University of Birmingham, a historical hub for Topological Science, you will follow in the footsteps of Nobel laureates who have pioneered in merging topology and physics. The work of Profs Tony Skyrme, David Thouless, and Michael Kosterlitz has laid the foundation for a field that opens “the door on an unknown world where matter can assume strange states,” according to the Nobel Committee. By joining this program, you will be part of this legacy and at the cutting edge of a field poised to revolutionize technology.
