The Railway Systems Integration MRes offers a unique blend of research and technical study, allowing you to pursue a research-based Masters degree in railway systems or engineering. Benefit from the cutting-edge research and educational programmes at the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education (BCRRE), where two-thirds of the course is dedicated to a major, individual research project.

This project, often conducted in collaboration with an industrial partner, allows you to delve into any aspect of railway research relevant to the Centre’s activities. The remaining one-third comprises taught modules, ensuring you gain a thorough understanding of recent developments and the industry’s needs for new and emerging technologies. With projects ranging from highly technical to business and policy issues, you will acquire the skills to apply these advancements in your research, making significant contributions to the field.

Admission Requirements

  • A 2:1 Honours degree in a relevant subject (e.g., physics, engineering, mathematics, or economics).
  • IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in any band, or equivalent English language qualifications.
  • TOEFL: 80 overall with no less than 19 in Reading, 19 in Listening, 21 in Speaking, and 19 in Writing.
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE): Academic 64 with no less than 59 in all four skills.
  • Cambridge English (exams taken from 2015): Advanced – minimum overall score of 169, with no less than 162 in any component.
  • International students will need an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate from the Foreign & Commonwealth Office before the University can issue a Certificate of Acceptance of Studies (CAS).
