Pursuing a PhD in Public Administration and Policy offers a unique opportunity to conduct original research under the guidance of distinguished academic supervisors. In your first year, you’ll engage in essential research training modules and have access to additional courses to enhance both discipline-specific and transferable skills.
The Department of Public Administration and Policy is part of the renowned School of Government, a leading UK and international centre for governance, politics, international development, and public management. With over 80 full-time academic staff and more than 1,200 undergraduate and postgraduate students, the School provides a dynamic and supportive research environment. As a doctoral student, you will participate in a wide range of research events, including a PGR Colloquium and departmental speaker series. An individualized training plan will be crafted to meet your specific needs, encompassing coursework and skills development.

Admission Requirements
- PhD/MPhil Requirements:
- A good Honours degree or equivalent academic qualification.
- Evidence of prior research experience and satisfactory progress with your thesis.
- Quality of the research proposal and its relevance to the department’s interests.
- High levels of self-discipline, motivation, and commitment.
- Relevant work experience is highly valued.
- English Language Requirements:
- IELTS: 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any band.
- TOEFL: 88 overall, with at least 21 in Reading, 20 in Listening, 22 in Speaking, and 21 in Writing.
- Pearson Test of English (PTE) including online: PTE Academic 67 with no less than 64 in all four skills.
- Cambridge English (exams taken from 2015): Advanced – minimum overall score of 176, with no less than 169 in any component.
