We boast a vibrant, international research community where early-career and established researchers work together, driven by theoretical innovation and a commitment to methodological pluralism. With strengths in qualitative, collaborative, and participative approaches, our program equips you with the skills and knowledge to address contemporary challenges and shape future possibilities in public administration.

Overview

The distance learning PhD in Public Administration and Policy offers a unique opportunity for those unable to live and work on campus regularly to conduct original research under the guidance of esteemed academic supervisors. You will engage in essential research training modules during your first year and have access to additional courses designed to enhance both discipline-specific and transferable skills. Our program requires a high level of independence and discipline, but our supportive supervisory teams will help you acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to complete your thesis. Participate in an active research environment through various online and hybrid events.

Distance learning students are typically expected to attend a one-week visit to the University during the College’s induction week in late September. This visit provides a fantastic opportunity to participate in training sessions and networking events while meeting your peers and supervisory team in person. The College of Social Sciences generously contributes to your accommodation and travel expenses. While distance learning students are not required to attend the University after this initial visit, they are welcome to visit at their own expense.

The Department of Public Administration and Policy, incorporating the Institute of Local Government Studies (INLOGOV), is a leading UK and international centre for governance, politics, international development, and public management. As a doctoral student, you will have opportunities to participate in a wide range of research events, including a PGR Colloquium and departmental speaker series. An individual training plan will be tailored to meet your needs, encompassing coursework and skills development. Our program prepares you for various career settings by cultivating specialist knowledge and professional skills.
