Overview
Pursuing a PhD in Political Science and International Studies with us means embarking on a journey of original research under the mentorship of esteemed academic supervisors. Your research culminates in an 80,000-word thesis, supported by research training modules in your first year. Our department, a part of the School of Government, stands as a premier UK and international centre for governance, politics, international development, and public management. Here, you will join a thriving community of over 80 full-time academic staff, 1,200 undergraduate and postgraduate students, and more than 70 doctoral researchers.
As a doctoral student, you’ll engage in a multitude of research events, including a PGR Colloquium and a departmental speaker series. Your personalized training plan will cover coursework and skills development, ensuring you gain specialized knowledge and professional skills for diverse career paths. Admission Requirements
- A good Honours degree (UK high upper second; USA GPA 3.40) in a relevant field.
- A strong research proposal.
- For international students: IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any band, or equivalent.
- TOEFL: 88 overall with no less than 21 in Reading, 20 in Listening, 22 in Speaking, and 21 in Writing.
- Pearson Test of English (PTE) including online: PTE Academic 67 with no less than 64 in all four skills.
- Cambridge English (exams taken from 2015): Advanced – minimum overall score of 176, with no less than 169 in any component.
