Overview

Embarking on a PhD in Political Science and International Studies at POLSIS offers you the unique opportunity to conduct original research under the guidance of experienced academic supervisors. This journey, culminating in an 80,000-word thesis, begins with a series of research training modules in your first year. Additionally, you will have access to various courses offered by the Department and the University to enhance your discipline-specific and transferable skills, ensuring you are well-prepared for a range of professional pathways.

As part of the School of Government, POLSIS stands among the leading centers for governance, politics, international development, and public management in the UK and internationally. With over 80 full-time academic staff, more than 1,200 undergraduate and postgraduate students, and over 70 doctoral researchers, the School of Government offers a vibrant and supportive academic community. Doctoral students participate in a wide array of research events, including the PGR Colloquium and departmental speaker series, fostering a collaborative and intellectually stimulating environment. Each student receives a personalized training plan, tailored to their specific needs, to ensure comprehensive skill development.

Our faculty is equipped to supervise a broad range of topics aligning with our research interests. We particularly welcome applications on themes within our research groups: Asian Politics, British Politics, European Studies, Gender and Feminist Theory, International Relations and Security Theory, Parties, Voters and Elections, Political Economy, and Political Theory. Applications for both full-time and part-time study are encouraged, promoting diverse perspectives and innovative research proposals.

Admission Requirements

  • Academic Requirements:
    • A good Honours degree (UK high upper second; USA GPA 3.40) in a related field.
    • A well-crafted research proposal that aligns with the department’s interests and demonstrates the potential for original research.
  • English Language Requirements:
    • IELTS: 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any band.
    • TOEFL: 88 overall, with no less than 21 in Reading, 20 in Listening, 22 in Speaking, and 21 in Writing.
    • Pearson Test of English (PTE) including online: PTE Academic 67 with no less than 64 in all four skills.
    • Cambridge English (exams taken from 2015): Advanced – minimum overall score of 176, with no less than 169 in any component.
