Overview
Studying for a PhD in International Development at IDD means joining a vibrant community of researchers and practitioners committed to excellence. You will conduct original research under the mentorship of distinguished academic supervisors, culminating in an 80,000-word thesis. In your first year, you’ll undertake research training modules, and throughout your studies, you may participate in additional courses that enhance your discipline-specific and transferable skills.

Admission Requirements
- MPhil: A good Honours degree in a relevant field, supplemented by appropriate work experience. Evidence of research ability, such as a high mark for an undergraduate dissertation, is required.
- PhD: Excellent undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, typically including a taught master’s degree with a dissertation. Candidates usually start with an MPhil and transfer to the PhD program after a satisfactory first-year review.
- A strong research proposal aligned with the department’s interests.
- High levels of self-discipline, motivation, and commitment to research.
- Relevant work experience is highly valued.
International Requirements:
- IELTS: 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any band.
- TOEFL: 88 overall, with at least 21 in Reading, 20 in Listening, 22 in Speaking, and 21 in Writing.
- Pearson Test of English (PTE) including online: PTE Academic 67 with no less than 64 in all four skills.
- Cambridge English (exams taken from 2015): Advanced – minimum overall score of 176, with no less than 169 in any component.
