Overview

Embarking on a PhD in International Development with IDD means joining a vibrant and supportive research community, whether you’re on campus or participating through our distance learning option. This flexibility allows you to pursue your academic goals without geographical constraints, offering the opportunity to conduct original research under the guidance of experienced academic supervisors. Your journey will culminate in an 80,000-word thesis that makes a meaningful contribution to the field.

In your first year, you’ll undertake essential research training modules and have access to additional courses designed to enhance both discipline-specific and transferable skills. Distance learning requires a high degree of independence and self-discipline, but you’ll have robust support from your supervisory team and an active research environment through online and hybrid events.

Distance learning students are encouraged to attend a one-week visit to the University during the College’s induction week, offering a valuable opportunity to engage in training sessions, networking events, and to meet peers and supervisors in person. The College of Social Sciences supports this visit by contributing to your accommodation and travel expenses.

As part of the School of Government, a leading centre for governance, politics, international development, and public management, you’ll benefit from a rich academic environment. Our school is home to over 80 full-time academic staff, more than 1,200 undergraduate and postgraduate students, and over 70 doctoral researchers. Completing this research degree will not only deepen your specialist knowledge but also equip you with professional skills applicable to a variety of career paths.
