Overview

Our PhD courses in English Language and Applied Linguistics are available both on-campus and through distance learning, providing flexibility to suit your lifestyle. We offer a standard PhD and a modular PhD, both of which require rigorous research and substantial written work. The standard PhD involves an 80,000-word thesis, while the modular PhD comprises three phases: two research papers (12,000 and 20,000 words) and a final 50,000-word thesis. Both programmes ensure regular contact with your supervisor, either in person or via email and video conference, allowing you to integrate your research with your professional life. Our distance learning options enable you to pursue your PhD part-time, making it easier to balance your studies with other commitments.

Admission Requirements

  • A good (normally a 2:1 or above) Honours degree or an equivalent qualification in a relevant area.
  • For PhD applicants: a Master’s qualification at Merit level or above in a relevant area.
  • Consideration of academic and professional qualifications or relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to study by distance learning (for distance learning programmes).
  • English language requirements: IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any band, or equivalent.

  • Module 1: Subject-focused work (12,000 words, 60 credits)
  • Module 2: Structured research and writing (20,000 words, 120 credits)
  • Module 3: Thesis (50,000 words, 360 credits)
