Overview
The Department of Music at Birmingham provides two distinct pathways for postgraduate research: the MA by Research and the PhD in Performance Practice. These programs are tailored for those looking to deepen their academic exploration following an undergraduate degree or to culminate their studies with a doctoral thesis.
For the MA by Research, you will produce a thesis of approximately 20,000 words, accompanied by a 45-minute performance (or 30-35 minutes for wind and brass players) that illustrates key ideas from your thesis. This is complemented by a detailed critical commentary and written programme notes.
PhD candidates are assessed in two stages. In the second year, you will present a 30-minute ‘Minor Performance,’ which includes a critical commentary and programme notes, followed by a viva. The final examination in the third year includes a thesis of about 60,000 words and a ‘Major Performance’ of one hour (or 40-50 minutes for wind and brass players). This performance, along with its programme notes and critical commentary, will be recorded and submitted as part of your thesis.
Our flexible program allows for both full-time and part-time study, accommodating students from around the world through our established distance learning options. Additionally, postgraduate students can enhance their studies by learning graduate academic languages free of charge, further enriching their research capabilities.
