Overview
The Forensic Psychology Practice Doctorate (ForenPsyD) at the Centre for Applied Psychology is a pioneering program for psychology graduates registered with the BPS who hold GBC status and possess prior experience in forensic settings. This program aims to provide you with the necessary knowledge and skills to excel as a forensic psychologist. You will learn to analyze offending behavior, understand its impact on victims, develop and implement treatment strategies, and provide expert consultancy and training. Emphasizing an evidence-based approach, the program considers issues of diversity, equality, and inclusion to prepare you for the multifaceted challenges of forensic practice.
The ForenPsyD can be completed full-time in three years or part-time in four years, combining academic teaching, research, and professional training through forensic practice placements. Full-time students will undertake three 120-day placements across diverse settings, while part-time students will complete their placements over four years, with the flexibility to continue working in their current roles. Our strong network of practitioners ensures a wide range of placement opportunities tailored to your professional growth and aspirations.
Admission Requirements
- A good Honours degree (2:1 or above) in Psychology that confers GBC status with the BPS.
- Relevant forensic experience, ideally as an assistant psychologist, demonstrating the application of psychological principles in a forensic setting under the supervision of a psychologist.
- Completion of an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. This course is exempt from the ‘Rehabilitation of Offenders Act,’ meaning all convictions must be declared.
- For part-time applicants: Employment in a relevant forensic setting with the title ‘Trainee Forensic Psychologist’ and access to weekly supervision by a qualified forensic psychologist. Employer support for attendance at University teaching sessions, thesis work, and rotational opportunities within the service to gain broad experience.
