Overview

Hosted by the Department of Modern Languages, our program draws on the extensive expertise of academics who can supervise projects exploring cultural forms in languages such as Arabic, Catalan, French, Italian, Persian, Portuguese, Spanish, and Russian. Our comprehensive approach to critical theory includes areas such as the Frankfurt School, postcolonial theory, decolonial studies, eco-criticism, critical race theory, gender and sexuality studies, feminist and queer theory, memory studies, translation theory, and linguistics.

Additionally, you’ll benefit from interdisciplinary support across the School of Languages, Cultures, Art History and Music, and the College of Arts and Law, enabling you to explore cultural forms beyond literature, including music, film, and visual art. This program’s unique combination of expertise and interdisciplinary approach makes it ideal for ambitious projects in comparative studies and critical theory.

Admission Requirements

  • A 2:1 honours degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant area.
  • A Master’s qualification at Merit level or above, usually in a relevant area, for PhD applicants.
  • Relevant professional experience may be considered.
  • For distance learning applicants: Demonstration of time, commitment, facilities, and experience.
  • Standard English language requirements: IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any band, or equivalent qualifications.
