Overview

This program offers comprehensive research training, enabling you to conduct independent investigative studies under the guidance of an experienced supervisory team. Your thesis will make an original contribution to the field, showcasing your independent judgement and research capabilities.

As a student, you will join the Graduate School within the College of Medical and Dental Sciences, granting you access to exceptional resources and support. You’ll receive supervision from leading academics, participate in advanced training and development courses, and have opportunities to present your research at poster festivals and other postgraduate events. Our state-of-the-art facilities include dedicated write-up rooms, extensive libraries, and advanced computer labs, all designed to support your academic journey.

You will also become part of the broader University of Birmingham postgraduate research community at Westmere House, where you can access training, career advice, wellbeing services, and a variety of social and academic events.

 

Admission Requirements

  • 2:1 honours degree in a subject relevant to the research area you are applying to
  • For international students, an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate is required
  • English language qualifications (for non-native speakers):
    • IELTS: 6.5 overall with no less than 6.0 in any band
    • TOEFL: 80 overall with no less than 19 in Reading, 19 in Listening, 21 in Speaking, and 19 in Writing
    • Pearson Test of English: Academic 64 with no less than 59 in all four skills
    • Cambridge English (post-2015 exams): Advanced, minimum overall score of 169 with no less than 162 in any component
  • Successful completion of the English for Academic Purposes Presessional course if language requirements are not met
